It’s always exciting as we countdown the final days of December and welcome January 1st as a chance for a new start. Often we are quick to set new goals and resolutions as we welcome the new year. However, in our excitement in welcoming the new year, we often overlook the significance of reflecting on the progress and goals that we have already accomplished, big or small. In looking back over the past 12 months over a reflective lens, we often realize that the experiences, memories, and even seemingly insignificant moments led to incredible lessons and insights that will impact the new year ahead. Together, let’s help our children to set eyes not only on setting new goals, but also in self-reflection over the previous year.
An Attitude of Gratitude: Reflecting over past achievements help children focus on the accomplishments and the positives, and creates an atmosphere of appreciation for those who helped them to get to where they are.
Confidence and Positive Self-Esteem: Receiving recognition from parents motivates and empower children to believe in their capabilities and instill a sense of pride to accomplish bigger dreams.
Acknowledging Progress: This is an integral part of personal growth and development. By taking the time to acknowledge the progress made so far helps both the parent and the child to celebrate each milestone and achievement.
Lessons from Challenges: Talking through what didn’t work out as planned teaches children to problem solve and develop strategies to overcome future obstacles.
Memories: Discussing memories from the past year provide a foundation to reflect upon, learn from, and make the most out of the opportunities that lie ahead in the new year.
